Illegal abortion in Thiès: The girl S. Siby, her aunt and her boyfriend charged

The case of the alleged clandestine abortion has taken a new legal turn in Thiès. S. Siby, 18, her alleged boyfriend, and her maternal aunt were brought before the Thiès prosecutor's office on Friday, September 4, at the conclusion of the investigation conducted by the central police station.

The three individuals involved—S. Siby, 18, her alleged boyfriend, and her maternal aunt—were brought before the prosecutor after several hearings and two periods of police custody. They are suspected of being involved, to varying degrees, in a case of clandestine abortion that required the young woman to receive medical treatment.

Following the court hearing, the prosecutor's office decided to prosecute them. S. Siby was charged and then released on bail, a measure motivated by her fragile health.

The situation is different for the other two. The girl's alleged boyfriend and her maternal aunt have been remanded in custody pending their trial.

This decision comes after an investigation launched following S. Siby's stay in a hospital. The young woman, who had suffered severe abdominal pain and metrorrhagia after ingesting medication intended to terminate her pregnancy, left the hospital while doctors wanted to conduct further tests.

Alerted, the police opened an investigation which led to the arrest of the young woman, then her alleged boyfriend and her aunt. S. Siby's mother, also initially arrested, was released after stating that she was unaware of the charges against her daughter.

After their initial release following a summons, they appeared again before investigators. They were taken into custody before being brought before the Thiès prosecutor's office yesterday, marking a new stage in the proceedings.

Now in the hands of the justice system, S. Siby, her boyfriend and her aunt will have to appear on September 9 before the Thiès court of flagrant offenses.
