Basse-Casamance : À Carounate, le Bukut célèbre la sortie de 800 initiés après 46 ans d'attente
After several weeks spent in the sacred grove, more than 800 young initiates emerged in Carounate, in Lower Casamance. Forty-six years after the last ceremony, the village in the commune of Oukout (Oussouye department) revived the Bukut, an ancestral initiation rite of the Ajaamat people. The event was experienced as a cultural and spiritual rebirth, marked by the fervor of sacred drums, songs, and dances.
Carounate was transformed into a place of communion and celebration. The village's narrow streets and squares welcomed crowds from all over Casamance to witness this rare moment. Families, dignitaries, and local authorities mobilized to surround the initiates, now called upon to cross the threshold of wisdom and carry on the ancestral heritage. The rhythms of sacred drums, songs, and dances gave the ceremony an intensity that transcended a simple rite, becoming a community celebration.

The Bukut is much more than a rite of passage. It is a school of life, a spiritual and social training where young people learn discipline, solidarity, and collective consciousness. In the sacred grove, initiates face trials that forge their character and sense of responsibility. "Here, we don't just train men. We forge consciences first," the elders remind us, emphasizing the educational and mystical dimension of this initiation.

The initiation ceremony is also a demonstration of strength and invulnerability. After their passage, the young people become the guarantors of social cohesion and the continuity of Diola values. They now embody the living memory of the community and the promise of its survival. Carounate, in the heart of the lush Casamance region, has established itself as a center of culture and spirituality, where every gesture, every symbol, every song recalls the richness of the Ajaamat heritage.
This 2026 Bukut will be remembered as a historic moment. It brought together several generations in a rare communion, strengthening social bonds and reaffirming Diola identity. The initiated youth now carry the torch of tradition, ready to perpetuate the heritage and transmit to future generations the values of discipline, solidarity, and respect for ancestors.
