Casse spectaculaire à Louga : 150 millions en or volés dans une bijouterie, la méthode des cambrioleurs effraie
A daring robbery targeted the "Khadimou Rassoul Thiam et Fils" jewelry store, owned by Cheikh Thiam, in the central market of Louga. The perpetrators made off with gold jewelry estimated at 150 million CFA francs. L'Observateur describes a particularly sophisticated modus operandi.
The modus operandi is worthy of a movie script.
According to the newspaper of the Future Media Group, the burglars exploited the limitations of the surveillance system, whose single camera only covered the storefront. They entered through the rear of the building and broke through the wall of the restroom facing a street to gain access to the store. Inside, they forced open a multi-combination safe with six balls before making off with the loot.
Concern among jewelers
This burglary has reignited fears among gold professionals. The newspaper L'Observateur draws parallels with a previous robbery in Grand Louga, where a shopkeeper lost gold jewelry valued at 15 million CFA francs, as well as 150,000 CFA francs in cash. "It's as if the criminals are systematically targeting jewelry stores and anyone who owns gold jewelry," fumed Moustapha Thiam, Secretary General of the Louga Jewelers Association (ABIL), quoted by the newspaper.
