CNDH : indignation après le meurtre de Ndèye Bigué Sène à Tivaouane
The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) says it is "appalled and outraged" by the murder of Ndèye Bigué Sène, a young woman found dead on August 22, 2026, in the bush of the Séico district, in Tivaouane.
In a statement sent to Seneweb, the commission indicated that, according to initial findings of the investigation reported in the press, a suspect arrested has confessed to the acts and mentioned mystical practices as well as the alleged involvement of an individual presented as a marabout (a religious leader). The CNDH (National Human Rights Commission) emphasizes, however, that these elements still need to be established by the courts.
"These elements, which still need to be established by the courts, nevertheless reveal the seriousness of the dangers linked to the exploitation of beliefs and the vulnerability of individuals for criminal purposes. The CNDH condemns in the strongest possible terms this extremely serious act and reiterates that no one can invoke a belief, a mystical practice, or a promise of wealth to attack the life, physical integrity, or dignity of a person," the statement said.
This tragedy also brings the issue of violence against women and girls in Senegal back into the spotlight. The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) points out, in this regard, that the national benchmark survey on violence against women reports that approximately three out of ten women have experienced at least one form of violence in the past twelve months.
The CNDH therefore calls on the judicial authorities to shed full light on this case, to establish responsibilities and to bring all those involved to justice, in strict compliance with the guarantees of a fair trial.
It also calls on public authorities, religious and community leaders, women's organizations, the media and society as a whole to strengthen prevention against the mechanisms of manipulation, control and violence of which women can be victims.
For the Commission, the fight against violence against women must not be limited to intervening after tragedies have occurred. It calls for strengthened preventive action, better protection for victims, and collective mobilization against all practices likely to undermine their dignity and safety.
