Décès du Dr Sow : Hommage du ministre de la Santé et forte doléance sur l'absence de neurochirurgiens dans la région
In the aftermath of the tragic accident on the Ndioum-Matam road, which claimed the life of Dr. Ibrahima Sow, director of Matam Hospital, and seriously injured the director of Ourossogui Hospital, grief remains palpable. The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene traveled to Matam. Against this backdrop of sorrow, a major concern has been raised by local stakeholders: the critical shortage of neurosurgeons in the region.
A good, humble and generous man
"Yesterday, I came to attend the official launch of Pink October. Many doctors and healthcare professionals honored this ceremony with their presence, including Dr. Sow, who had organized a community service day at his hospital earlier that morning. Life is fleeting and fragile. Dr. Sow didn't know that by coming to this ceremony, he wouldn't be returning to Matam. He also didn't know that his participation would be his last act. Yet, it was a remarkable act," the minister said emotionally.
The minister remembered the deceased as "a good, kind, humble, simple, discreet, and generous man," a role model whose example should serve as a reference for the entire healthcare system. He offered his condolences, on behalf of the government, the President of the Republic, and the Prime Minister, to the bereaved family, healthcare staff, and the SAMES (Service d'Aide Médicales et d'Enseignement Supérieur - Medical and Social Assistance Service).
The complaint: not a single neurosurgeon in the entire region
Alongside this tribute, an urgent appeal from a spokesperson to the minister: "There is no neurosurgeon in the entire Matam region. In any of the hospitals. This is unacceptable. This represents a major risk for the entire population."
According to him, this deficiency makes it impossible to treat head injuries on site: "Without a neurosurgeon, we live in precarious conditions. A serious accident is equivalent to a fatal sentence."
Local stakeholders are therefore asking the ministry to provide hospitals in Matam, Ourossogui and Agnam with neurosurgery specialists, in order to prevent deaths linked to a lack of specialized care and late evacuations to Dakar or Touba.
This heartfelt plea resonates particularly strongly after the tragedy that claimed the life of Dr. Sow, who was returning from a public health mission. It should be noted that the director of the Ourossogui hospital, injured in the accident, was evacuated to Touba for further treatment.
