A video that has gone viral on social media, particularly on TikTok, is causing a stir. It shows a student from the Kédougou region, living in Saint-Louis, making a desperate plea for help in the face of the threat of eviction from their accommodation.
Reached by phone, the communications officer for the Association of Students from Kédougou in Saint-Louis provided details on the situation. According to Abdoulaye Diallo, the association rents a total of three apartments to house students. However, one of these apartments, occupied by female students, is facing eviction proceedings due to rent arrears.
"The unpaid rent amounts to three months and nearly 500,000 CFA francs," he stated. Upon receiving the landlord's notice, several steps were taken to rectify the situation, but unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful.
Abdoulaye Diallo also specifies that a meeting is planned with the parent association based in Dakar in order to examine the situation and find a quick solution to prevent the students from finding themselves without accommodation.
He said he was worried about the urgency of the situation, as the deadline given by the owner was about to expire.
This situation reignites the debate on supporting students from Kédougou. What role do local authorities and mining companies in the region actually play in improving the living and studying conditions of these young people? Are they unaware that education remains one of the most effective tools for combating poverty and promoting local development?
If no solution is found within the next two weeks, the students concerned risk being evicted from their accommodation, which could jeopardize the continuation of their studies.
