DPG - Al Aminou Lo aux Sénégalais : « Les discours xénophobes ne correspondent pas à nos valeurs »
During his major address on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo reframed the debate on xenophobia. Faced with the rise of stigmatizing rhetoric and the observed retreat into identity politics, he firmly condemned xenophobic excesses deemed contrary to the fundamental values and history of the nation. "This is extremely dangerous rhetoric. It must stop. We cannot be this open country with resources that are found everywhere else, everywhere in the world. Go to Alaska, you will see Senegalese people and no xenophobic rhetoric will flourish there," he declared.
According to him, "we must, in turn, ensure that foreigners living among us strictly adhere to the residency rules." "I've already held a meeting on this subject. And the conclusion is quite simple. In fact, the electronic border control system isn't present at all border crossings. People enter Senegal, but they aren't registered. You can't know who has stayed here for more than three months. This is an urgent matter that we will address," he lamented.
And he added: “But please, it is these kinds of statements that do not reflect our values. Many of us have relatives who come from the sub-region.” The head of government reminded everyone that Senegal was built on sub-regional mixing. He recounted: “When I was appointed Prime Minister, they found a Mauritanian village where my great-grandparents lived. That is Senegal. We are all mixed. We all have relatives in the sub-region. So it is these stigmatizations that do us no favors.”
By combining control of flows, protection of rights and promotion of the "country brand" in the lead-up to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the State, it says, intends to preserve the fragile balance between national security and tradition of hospitality.
“Our diplomatic influence must also benefit our tourism sectors, particularly with the organization of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), for which I have the honor of chairing the Senegalese oversight committee,” he stated. He then added, “Yes, many people will come to see us. Let’s give them the desire to return to Senegal, and we have already begun working on this. It’s a program called Geology Heritage that will develop the industry, but also business tourism and beach tourism. Religious tourism is also essential. Saudi Arabia has understood this. The promotion of domestic and inbound tourism is also receiving all the necessary attention.”
