Tragedy at Sadio's municipal stadium: a player dies during a Navétanes match

Consternation and sadness in the town of Sadio, where a player collapsed during a match before passing away last Tuesday at the municipal stadium.

The tragedy occurred during the match between ASC Jokko and ASC Diambars, the third and final matchday of Group B in the Navétanes tournament. Cheikh Tidiane Diop, a player for ASC Jokko, collapsed on the field in front of his teammates, opponents, and the crowd who, as every year, had come to experience the excitement of this popular tournament. He did not get up.

The testimony of a close friend

Abdou Chercheur Sall gave a moving account to Seneweb of the player's final moments: "It only took a few minutes. Just a few short minutes before the final whistle for football, the game he loved so much, to turn into tragedy. At the Sadio municipal stadium, Cheikh Tidiane Diop collapsed on the ground, felled mid-match, before the eyes of his teammates, his opponents, and a crowd that, as every year, had come to experience the fervor of the Navétanes."

His ASC Jokko team was facing Diambars, from Zone 4 of Sadio, in the final match of the group stage. A match like so many others, played with the intensity typical of local youth leagues, where the honor of the neighborhood hangs in the balance with every ball. And then, suddenly, silence. The game stopped. It was no longer a question of the result, but of life itself.

Cheikh Tidiane Diop will not rise again. He has gone to where he loved to be: on the pitch, in his jersey, surrounded by his loved ones.

The reaction of ASC Jokko

In a statement signed by the president of its Executive Board, ASC Jokko said it learned "with profound sorrow and immense sadness" of the death of its player. In light of this loss, the club has decided to suspend all sporting activities for the current season as a sign of mourning, respect, and solidarity with the family of the deceased. The statement pays tribute to Cheikh Tidiane Diop as much more than a player: "a brother, a companion, and a full-fledged member of our sporting family," whose sudden departure "leaves a great void within ASC Jokko and in the hearts of all who knew him."
