Quackery scam: A marabout brought before the DIC for 32 million CFA francs

On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) referred CS Niane, who is being prosecuted for fraud involving quackery and the sum of 32,237,114 CFA francs, according to Seneweb sources.

A meeting during a religious ceremony

It all began in 2023. The plaintiff, BS Diop, met the accused at a religious ceremony. CS Niane, presenting himself as a marabout, offered him his services, claiming to be able to "multiply" his money through invocation and the intervention of djinns.

Increasingly expensive rituals

Convinced by this speech, BS Diop submitted to the recommendations of the self-proclaimed marabout: baths with potions presented as mystical, participation in various rituals. As the months passed, the financial demands multiplied. The marabout justified each new request by the need for "sacrifices" intended to appease the djinns, an essential condition, according to him, for the success of the ritual and the fulfillment of the initial promise.

Giving in to this pressure, BS Diop eventually handed over sums of money to CS Niane, the cumulative amount of which reached 32,237,114 CFA francs.

A heavy debt burden for the plaintiff's family

BS Diop explains that to raise the required funds, his wife had to take out a loan and mortgage their apartment. To settle this debt and reclaim the property, he then had to take out a bank loan himself.

It is in view of all these financial charges that the plaintiff is now demanding full reimbursement from CS Niane for the damage suffered.

After being questioned and having his statement recorded, the marabout admitted to the charges against him, while also providing details about the circumstances surrounding the handover of the funds.

In his defense, he claims that the plaintiff himself approached him to perform a ritual he calls "Tabdil," which involves making sacrifices and invoking djinns to make the client rich. He specifies that at the end of this ritual, he was to give BS Diop a suitcase full of money, supposedly "inexhaustible."

Regarding the use of the funds received, CS Niane maintains that he spent everything on the purchase of animals and the performance of several sacrifices; operations, he specifies, carried out with the knowledge and agreement of the plaintiff.

However, while acknowledging receiving money from BS Diop, the accused disputes the total amount claimed by the latter. He nevertheless stated his willingness to reimburse the sums he believes he actually received.
