The video went viral yesterday on TikTok. It shows a little girl, in tears, sitting on a cart and clearly opposed to being sent to Mauritania. Behind these few seconds of viral footage lies the whole question of child protection and the limits of parental authority.
“Daddy, leave me with Mommy! I want to stay with her. I’m devastated, help me… Call my mommy,” the little girl cries in Pulaar in the video. A woman who witnessed the incident claims over the phone that the child was taken away “by force” and that she was “tied to the cart.”
The events reportedly took place in the village of Lodé, in the Podor department. The man seen in the video is believed to be the girl's father. According to reports surrounding the footage, he allegedly wanted to separate her from her mother and take her to Mauritania.
The video, widely shared on TikTok and by internet users, sparked strong emotions and numerous appeals to child protection services. It particularly drew the attention of the Open Environment Educational Action Services (AEMO) in Podor and Linguère.
In this type of situation, the issue is not simply to determine who, the father or the mother, has authority over the child. It is primarily about establishing the conditions under which the relocation took place, the possible existence of a court order concerning custody, and above all, the risks to which the minor might be exposed.
Parental rights cannot, under any circumstances, override the best interests of the child. If the events shown in the video are confirmed, the manner in which the girl was allegedly transported and her state of distress will require the particular attention of the competent authorities.
For social services, intervention may include assessing the family situation, interviewing the parents, verifying custody arrangements, and, if necessary, implementing protective measures. In a border area like Podor, the cross-border nature of the case also requires particular vigilance to prevent any irregular movement of a minor.
Beyond the emotion aroused by these images, one question remains: can a child be moved against his will, under such conditions, for the sole reason that the adult taking him is his father?
The answer to this question should not be left to social media. It falls under the purview of the authorities responsible for upholding children's rights and determining, in each situation, what truly constitutes their best interests.
Lodé's video could thus become more than just a viral sequence: a wake-up call about the need to strengthen child protection mechanisms in rural and border areas, where family conflicts can sometimes take place far from the eyes of institutions.
