Gambia River: Water levels are falling in Kédougou, but remain below the alert threshold

Fleuve Gambie : le niveau de l’eau baisse à Kédougou, mais reste sous le seuil d’alerte

The receding waters continue at several monitoring stations on the Gambia River and its tributaries, according to the daily hydrological bulletin of September 4, 2026. In Kédougou, the water level recorded at 8 a.m. was 3.71 meters, a drop of 43 centimeters in 24 hours.

The situation remains under control. With the alert level set at 7 meters, the level observed in Kédougou is 3.29 meters below the alert threshold.

A widespread decline across several stations

The downward trend is also observed at Mako, where the water level fell from 3.98 to 3.68 meters, a decrease of 30 cm in 24 hours. At Simenti, the level dropped significantly, from 8.66 to 7.81 meters, a decrease of 85 cm.

In Diaguiri, the river also shows a drop of 56 cm, with a water level of 2.44 meters. At Thiokoye, the level has fallen to 2.20 meters, after a drop of 38 cm.

Some increases recorded

Despite this general downward trend, some stations are still experiencing a rise in water levels. This is particularly the case in Gouloumbou, where the height has increased from 7.60 to 7.84 meters, a rise of 24 cm.

The same situation was observed in Niokolokoba, where the level rose from 3.20 to 3.42 meters, registering a progression of 22 cm in 24 hours.

Levels still far from alert thresholds

Available data indicates that stations with an alert level remain below their respective thresholds. In Kédougou, the difference is 3.29 meters, compared to 2.62 meters in Mako and 5.19 meters in Simenti. In Diaguiri, the level also remains 3.56 meters below the alert level.

The bulletin also reports unavailable data at the Diarha Pont station for today's measurement.

The hydrological situation on September 4th was therefore marked by a significant drop in water levels at several stations, notably in Kédougou, Mako, and Simenti, while a few monitoring points still recorded a slight rise. Authorities thus have regular monitoring of the evolution of the Gambia River and its tributaries.
