Fleuve Sénégal : 3,52 mètres à Podor, la vigilance renforcée
The Senegal River continues to rise in Podor, reaching 3.52 meters on Thursday morning, three centimeters higher than 24 hours earlier. At 1.48 meters below the alert level of 5 meters, the situation remains under control for the time being, according to L'Observateur.
The indicators remain significantly more reassuring than in 2025 at the same time, when the water level reached 4.64 meters in Podor. Upstream, the Bakel station shows 6.09 meters compared to 9.38 meters last year, while Matam records 5.45 meters compared to 8.19 meters in 2025. The main uncertainty now lies in future rainfall and the evolution of flows in the upper basin, particularly the Bafing, Bakoye, and Falémé rivers.
According to Elimane Abdoul Fall, head of the Hydrology Division at the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, quoted in the newspaper L'Observateur, the situation is not alarming but remains fluid. Daily monitoring is being carried out by the Directorate of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE), using automatic stations and the gradual implementation of an "early warning system designed to anticipate flood risks." Although Podor's geographical configuration facilitates the natural mitigation of flooding, residents of low-lying areas, basins, and the immediate vicinity of the river remain vigilant, L'Observateur reports.
