Gestion des déchets : Le gouverneur de Thiès alerte sur les risques liés à la décharge de Keur Massamba Guèye
The governor of Thiès, Saër Ndao, has raised the alarm about the situation at the Thiès landfill. According to him, the site has reached its limits and its continued operation poses a threat to public health and the environment.
"In reality, the Thiès landfill has reached its limits. Officially, it is a closed landfill. But, from time to time, actions are carried out there and contribute to endangering the population from a public health point of view," the governor said.
Saër Ndao stated that he was approached by residents of the Keur Massamba Guèye neighborhood, where the landfill is located. According to him, the residents are directly suffering the consequences of the activities that continue to be carried out on the site.
The governor specifically points to the presence of recyclers who, despite the official closure of the landfill, continue to carry out their activities there for their personal interests.
"The recyclers who are always there continue to use the landfill for their personal purposes and create unpleasant situations that harm the immediate residents, especially those of Keur Massamba Guèye," he laments.
Faced with this situation, the governor announces that discussions are underway to find solutions to rehabilitate the site and give it a new purpose.
Covering an area of 6 hectares, the landfill represents, according to Saër Ndao, a significant space in the heart of the city that could be used in other ways. "This landfill covers six hectares and it deprives Thiès of a lot of space, which I find unacceptable," he says.
The governor also emphasized the site's location, situated in the heart of a residential area, and the health and environmental risks it poses. "If we leave the landfill as it is, the entire population of Thiès will be affected."
For Saër Ndao, the landfill issue must be addressed from the perspective of sustainable development. "If we want sustainable development in our communities, we need to move towards a good control of the aggregates of development, particularly public health, the environment and hygiene," he emphasizes.
He warns of the consequences of not finding a lasting solution: "If we leave the Thiès landfill as it is, we will be in a situation where all the people of Thiès will be affected."
The governor also raised the risk of the situation worsening due to the effects of climate change. "If the environment of Thiès is completely polluted, combined with the climate disruption we are currently experiencing, it will be a catastrophe in Thiès," he warned.
Saër Ndao is therefore calling for a concerted approach among the various stakeholders in order to find a sustainable solution for the management of the site. "We must therefore adopt a constructive, concerted approach to find ways and solutions that will allow us to give this landfill a new purpose," he concludes.
