Grand Yoff: Accused by his boss of embezzling 10 million FCFA, a merchant admits to having squandered part of the funds on "1XBET"
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the research brigade of the Grand Yoff district police station arrested a shop employee suspected of embezzling approximately 10 million CFA francs from his employer.
On Monday, September 21, 2026, Mr. M. SYLLA, a merchant, went to the Grand Yoff district police station to report acts of theft committed against him by one of his employees, Mr. D. DIOP.
When questioned as the complainant, Mr. Sylla stated that he operates a shop located in the Grand Yoff market, where he employs several people, including the accused. He explained that he had repeatedly noticed cash shortages during his daily reconciliations.
The triggering of suspicions and the internal investigation
According to the complainant's account, it was another employee, harboring serious suspicions about D. DIOP, who alerted him. Based on this, Mr. SYLLA reviewed the footage from the store's security cameras.
This investigation revealed that the accused, after collecting the proceeds from merchandise sales, fraudulently concealed the funds in his pockets instead of depositing them in the store's safe. The complainant estimates the total loss at approximately 10,000,000 CFA francs, based on the suspect's three years of service at the business, according to Seneweb sources.
Following this complaint, the Grand Yoff police investigation unit arrested the suspect on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. He gave his identity as follows:
D. DIOP, born in 1992 (34 years old), trader, residing in Grand Yoff.
The confession of the accused
Under questioning recorded in the transcript, D. DIOP admitted the facts attributed to him, particularly after being confronted with the visual evidence provided by the complainant.
To justify his actions, he cited financial difficulties. He explained that he had squandered part of the funds in question on online sports betting via the "1XBET" platform, while the other part had been transferred to his family, residing in a village in the Thiès region.
The accused, however, disputed the amount of damages claimed by his employer, estimating them at approximately 1,000,000 CFA francs. He also stated that he had begun his criminal activities before the 2026 Magal pilgrimage.
D. DIOP was taken into custody.
