Senegalese health authorities are stepping up the fight against malaria during the rainy season. The official launch of the "Winter 2026: Zero Malaria, I'm Committed" campaign took place this Saturday, September 12, at the foot of the African Renaissance Monument, in the presence of authorities, partners, and community representatives.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Dr. Ibrahima Sy, in collaboration with the ministries in charge of Culture, Crafts and Tourism, as well as Communication and Relations with Institutions.

This mobilization comes as Senegal records a significant decline in malaria-related indicators. According to data presented at the ceremony, the incidence of the disease has fallen from 22.8 cases per 1,000 inhabitants in 2024 to 12.8 cases per 1,000 inhabitants in 2025. At the same time, the number of deaths has decreased from 312 to 150.

Despite these advances, health authorities intend to remain vigilant, particularly in areas where the disease remains more prevalent. Kolda, Tambacounda, Kédougou, Kaolack, and Touba are among the localities requiring sustained attention.

For the 2026 rainy season, several preventive measures are being strengthened. These include the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, raising public awareness, prevention among children, as well as rapid screening and treatment of cases.

Senegal now has 73 out of 79 health districts in the pre-elimination phase for malaria. This result reflects the progress made in recent years, but it does not mean that the threat has been eliminated.

With the arrival of the rainy season and the increase in areas conducive to mosquito breeding, prevention remains central to the national strategy. Authorities urge communities to continue protective measures and to seek medical help promptly if they experience any suggestive symptoms.

The stated objective remains to continue the progress made and to bring Senegal further closer to the elimination of malaria.
