Hommage : Macky Sall salue le « legs majeur » laissé par Cheikh Hamidou Kane
Former President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall, joined the many tributes paid to the writer and high-ranking civil servant Cheikh Hamidou Kane, who passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 98. Honoring the memory of a "talented writer and great intellectual figure of Senegal and Africa," the former head of state emphasized the universal significance of his major work: "With Ambiguous Adventure , he leaves us a major legacy, which will continue to illuminate our thinking on identity, culture, and our relationship to the world. His career in service to the state and his intellectual commitment will also remain etched in our collective memory," he declared, before offering his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and to the literary community.
Born in 1928 in Matam, Cheikh Hamidou Kane was an emblematic figure in Senegalese high administration and literature. A graduate of the Sorbonne and the National School of Overseas France (ENFOM), he made his mark on African literary history with the 1961 publication of Ambiguous Adventure , a masterpiece awarded the Grand Literary Prize of Black Africa, which explores the cultural divide between tradition and modernity. Also a dedicated public servant, he held several high-ranking ministerial positions (notably in Planning and Industrial Development) under the presidencies of Léopold Sédar Senghor and Abdou Diouf, while also undertaking major international engagements with UNICEF and the IDRC.
