A truly horrific scene unfolded last Tuesday in Touré Fass, a village in the commune of Darou Marnane (Louga). A woman named Nd. F. Dieng stabbed her co-wife's son and her own twin children before slashing her own abdomen with the knife and setting fire to the room where she had locked herself in with the children. The victims are all three years old.
According to L'Observateur's account, the accused waited until her husband and co-wife were gone before joining the three children who were playing in their parents' room. Nd. F. Dieng, knife in hand, entered the room and closed the door behind her. She first targeted her co-wife's son; she grabbed him and slit his throat. Turning to her twins, she stabbed each of them twice. "The children collapsed, covered in blood. Nd. F. Dieng then turned the weapon on herself, plunging it into her abdomen before setting the room on fire."
The Observer reports that the other villagers were alerted by the acrid smell of burning and the smoke billowing from the room. They initially thought it was just a fire. But upon forcing the door open, they discovered the horror. "Four bodies lying in a pool of blood," the newspaper notes. "Flames dancing around them. The villagers organized themselves. They evacuated the victims to the Darou Marnane health district."
The body of the child with his throat slit was taken to the morgue, while Nd. F. Dieng and her twins were transferred to Cheikhoul Khadim Hospital in Touba. One of the alleged killer's children succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The Darou Marnane gendarmerie brigade has opened an investigation. The progress of the case is contingent upon the health of Nd. F. Dieng, who is seriously injured.
While awaiting the investigators' conclusions, speculation is rife. Relatives, quoted by L'Observateur, claim that the accused "is not in full possession of her mental faculties. She has reportedly been suffering from mental disorders for some time."
The newspaper cautiously notes that this theory "remains to be confirmed, as does the sequence of events."
