Humeubeul d'Oussouye: The Queen Mother calls on consciences, Rose Wardini pledges to amplify her voice

Humeubeul d’Oussouye : La Reine mère interpelle les consciences, Rose Wardini s’engage à porter sa voix

During the Humeubeul, a major traditional ceremony in the Kingdom of Oussouye, a powerful message resonated beyond the songs, dances, and sacred rites. It came from the Queen Mother, Alis Oumouy Diédhiou, who used the celebration to deliver a passionate plea for the preservation of cultural heritage and the strengthening of support for the Royal Court. This appeal resonated with Rose Wardini, who decided to amplify it and bring this cause to the attention of partners and decision-makers.

The Queen Mother emphasized that Humeubeul is much more than a simple cultural event. An ancestral heritage passed down from generation to generation, this celebration is a major spiritual gathering that embodies the soul of the Kingdom of Oussouye, the strength of its traditions, and the values of solidarity that unite its people.

Installed on August 24, 2000, when she was only fourteen years old, Alis Oumouy Diédhiou claims to know all the intricacies of organizing this event, which has now become one of the strongest symbols of Casamance's cultural heritage. According to her, while the Humeubeul festival was once experienced primarily within the kingdom, its renown has now far exceeded the borders of Oussouye, attracting visitors each year from several regions of Senegal as well as numerous foreigners.

This opening is a source of immense pride for the local population, but it also entails increasingly heavy responsibilities. For nearly two weeks, the Royal Court must ensure the reception, accommodation, and catering of numerous visitors while also ensuring respect for the spiritual and customary requirements that accompany the ceremony.

"No one should leave without having been welcomed with dignity," the Queen Mother reminded everyone, stressing the importance of sharing which forms the very foundation of Humeubeul.

She explains that traditionally, everyone contributes according to their means. Harvests from the royal rice paddies, gifts in kind, ritual sacrifices, and family participation ensure the festivities can take place. But current economic realities are making this increasingly difficult.

In a candid testimony, she sought to dismantle certain preconceived notions about royalty. For her, being at the head of a traditional institution does not mean living in opulence. On the contrary, royalty is first and foremost synonymous with duties, responsibilities, and a constant commitment to serving the community.

"People see the royalty, but they don't see all the expenses and obligations that come with it," she suggested.

Faced with the rising costs associated with preserving traditions, the Queen Mother appealed to public authorities, technical and financial partners, economic operators, and the sons and daughters of Kassaumay. In her view, preserving Humeubeul must be a collective responsibility.

It is in this context that Rose Wardini's presence took on a particular significance. Moved by the Queen Mother's remarks and by the challenges facing the Royal Court, she expressed her willingness to support this momentum for heritage preservation.

According to several people close to the kingdom, Rose Wardini's enthronement marks the beginning of a commitment that goes beyond mere protocol. Aware of the historical role played by the Oussouye monarchy in preserving Diola traditions, she has decided to use her renown, her connections, and her experience to support the advocacy efforts of the Queen Mother.

Its ambition is to help raise awareness of the realities of the kingdom and to educate partners about the needs related to safeguarding this unique heritage. This includes supporting initiatives of the Royal Court, improving reception capacities during major ceremonies, and promoting the transmission of traditional knowledge to younger generations.

For the Queen Mother, this commitment represents a strong signal. She sees it as proof that the values of solidarity, at the heart of Humeubeul, can still mobilize people beyond the borders of the kingdom.

In a world where traditions are sometimes weakened by social and economic changes, Alis Oumouy Diédhiou believes it is urgent to build bridges between the guardians of cultural heritage and those capable of supporting its preservation. This is precisely the role that Rose Wardini has chosen to assume by deciding to be the voice of the Queen Mother and to advocate for her cause.

Beyond the festivities, the Humeubeul festival served as a platform for broader reflection on the future of Oussouye's cultural heritage. This reflection, initiated by a Queen Mother concerned with preserving the legacy received from her ancestors, is now being carried on by Rose Wardini, determined to mobilize support for a cause that touches upon the very identity of Casamance.

Between memory, spirituality and solidarity, the two women appear today as bearers of the same message: preserving the traditions of Oussouye means preserving an essential part of the history and soul of Casamance.
