Hydrologie du fleuve Sénégal : La tendance haussière s'accélère à Podor, la vigilance reste de mise
At the beginning of October, the hydrological situation on the Senegal River is a major concern for the local population. At the Podor station, located at the Elhadj Boubou Sall Quay, the water level is rising significantly during this 2026 rainy season.
On Monday, October 5, 2026, the reading taken at precisely 8:00 a.m. showed a height of 3.94 meters on the flood gauge. Twenty-four hours earlier, yesterday at the same time, the river level was 3.81 meters. In just one day, the waters have thus risen by 13 centimeters.
Although this rapid rise calls for caution, the situation presents a different dynamic than that observed during the previous campaign. On the same date last year, the river reached 5.41 meters, exceeding the critical level.
To date, the water level of 3.94 meters remains below the alert threshold of 5.00 meters set for the Podor station. However, the rapid evolution of water levels during this winter period necessitates anticipating any risk of sudden influx.
Regarding family safety, increased supervision of children is requested to prevent any risk of drowning or accidents near the river. In terms of livestock farming, herders are urged to keep a close eye on their animals and secure grazing areas near the floodplain. Finally, fishing, transportation, and agricultural professionals are called upon to secure or firmly moor their riverside equipment, including canoes, nets, floating containers, and motor pumps.
Monitoring of the watercourse continues on a daily basis to anticipate future fluctuations between now and the end of the rainy season.
