Incendie au marché Corona de Tambacounda : Un mort, des dégâts majeurs et la colère de Sidiki Kaba
A fire of unusual intensity broke out during the night of Monday, October 19th to Tuesday, October 20th, 2026 at the Corona market in the municipality of Tambacounda. The blaze, which occurred around 9:12 PM, caused significant material damage, estimated at several million CFA francs.
According to Captain Samba Adjie, commander of the 61st Fire and Rescue Company No. 3, firefighters were alerted at 9:12 PM to a fire at the Corona market. Arriving on the scene at 9:15 PM, emergency services found the market fire affecting several stalls and deployed significant resources to contain the blaze.
A 75-year-old man with asthma, who had come to check on his canteen, collapsed and was rushed to the Tambacounda Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A 35-year-old woman also suffered an attack and was quickly attended to by emergency services. Her condition is now considered stable.
While the material damage is considerable, the rapid intervention of the firefighters limited the risk of the fire spreading and brought it under control after approximately an hour of operation. The exact circumstances of the blaze remain unknown at this time, but an investigation has been opened by the central police station in Tambacounda. As a reminder, a similar fire broke out at the Corona market and the central market a few months ago, causing significant material losses.
Sidiki Kaba is demanding the modernization of the market and compensation for the traders.
Former Prime Minister Sidiki Kaba expressed his deep emotion and sadness at this latest tragedy. He wished to express his heartfelt compassion and unwavering solidarity with all those affected by this economic and social disaster.
However, according to him, compassion alone is no longer enough. Faced with this latest fire that has struck the economic heart of the region, the former head of government believes that the time has come for legitimate indignation at the recurrence of these tragedies. For Sidiki Kaba, the traders of Tambacounda can no longer continue to pay the heavy price for the insecurity of public infrastructure.
He therefore makes a solemn and urgent appeal to local and state authorities to finally order a definitive and structural response to this situation, believing that makeshift solutions must give way to firm and lasting decisions.
To address this crisis, Sidiki Kaba is demanding the immediate implementation of an emergency plan providing financial support and immediate compensation to enable affected businesses to rebuild. He is also calling for the complete modernization of the Corona market, including bringing the electrical grid up to code, installing functional fire hydrants, and creating clear access routes to facilitate emergency response. Appealing to the state's responsibility, he emphasizes that the survival of thousands of families and the economic stability of the entire region are at stake.
