Inondations aux Maristes : 188 sinistrés recensés, la Brigade d’hygiène déploie un plan d'urgence sanitaire
The floods that struck the Maristes neighborhood in Dakar severely affected 41 families, representing a total of 188 vulnerable people. Faced with the major health risks caused by stagnant rainwater and unsanitary conditions, the Dakar Departmental Hygiene Brigade launched a large-scale prevention campaign to curb any risk of the spread of epidemics.
On the ground, technical teams led by Warrant Officer Ibrahima Guèye carried out significant disinfection, disinsection, and delarvation operations. These emergency interventions specifically aimed to neutralize pathogens and eradicate disease vectors proliferating in larval breeding grounds after the floodwaters recede.
Combating malaria and diarrheal diseases and community engagement
The prevention of malaria and diarrheal diseases is a top priority for this health mission. Alongside chemical treatments of at-risk areas, the teams conducted awareness sessions for local residents on basic rules of personal hygiene and collective sanitation to address stagnant water.
The operation brought together a broad coalition of local institutional and social actors, including the prefect, municipal authorities, neighborhood chiefs, the Badiénou Gokh networks, sports and cultural associations (ASC) as well as religious leaders.
This joint intervention aims to protect the health of families affected by the health consequences of the floods. It comes in a context where the treatment of stagnant water and the sanitation of low-lying areas remain crucial challenges for safeguarding public health in the capital.
