JOJ Dakar 2026 : Un pêcheur écroué pour le vol de deux chaînes en or d’une professeure de l’Unesco
A. Sène, a fisherman residing in Gueule Tapée, was remanded in custody after appearing before the Dakar prosecutor's office on Thursday. According to Seneweb, he is being prosecuted for the theft of two gold chains belonging to MK Lees, a professor holding the UNESCO Chair for Sport and Peace, who was in Dakar for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3rd, at approximately 10:30 a.m., on the Corniche Ouest, near Magic Land. According to the victim's statement, she was walking with a friend when a man suddenly approached her and snatched the two gold chains she was wearing around her neck. Her assailant then fled towards Soumbédioune beach.
Surprised by the speed of the attack, MK Lees tried to pursue the thief, but he had already gotten ahead. A motorcyclist named I. Wone, who witnessed the scene, then gave chase. In his statement, he explained that he saw the suspect suddenly approach the two women before snatching jewelry from one of them.
The chase continued to Soumbédioune beach, where the suspect reportedly sought refuge with fishermen. Caught by the motorcyclist, he eventually handed over a gold chain. The item was immediately returned to the victim. However, the victim reported that a second chain and the two pendants were still missing. I. Wone then returned to question the suspect about the remaining items. The suspect denied stealing them.
It was when other people arrived, also pursuing the suspect, that the witness withdrew to alert the police. Officers from the Anti-Crime Brigade (BLC) of the Dakar Urban Security Division intervened and arrested A. Sène, who had taken refuge on the beach.
Taken to the police station, the victim formally identified the fisherman as her attacker. She also valued her two pendants at 8,000 euros, or approximately 5.2 million FCFA, before filing a complaint.
A. Sène admitted to snatching a gold chain from a woman on the Corniche Ouest before fleeing. However, he maintained that he only stole one chain, denying any involvement in the disappearance of two pendants, one of which reportedly bears the Youth Olympic Games logo and the other features a white pearl.
He admitted that he had wanted to resell the jewelry to meet his financial needs.
The suspect also stated that he worked as a fisherman and resided in Gueule Tapée. When questioned about his criminal record, he reported two previous convictions for possession and use of marijuana, resulting in prison sentences of three months and two years respectively.

Les senegalais ont maintenant comme religion: le mensonge, le vol, la tricherie et la trahison.
