Kédougou : La pénurie d’oignons fait grimper les prix et complique le quotidien des ménagères
In Kédougou, onions are becoming increasingly scarce in the markets. This situation is leading to a significant price increase and complicating the daily lives of housewives, who are struggling to prepare traditional meals that require a large quantity of them.
A bag of onions, which used to sell for around 11,500 CFA francs, is now offered at 15,000 CFA francs, an increase of 3,500 CFA francs. This increase is directly reflected in retail prices.
In the few shops that still have supplies, customers now have to buy onions by the kilogram. The price per kilogram ranges between 850 and 1,000 CFA francs.
Housewives in search of the precious condiment
This situation is causing numerous complaints among women. In the markets and shops of the regional capital, some housewives say they are struggling to find enough for their daily needs. "We go to several shops before finding onions. And when we do find them, the price is very high," complains Ndèye Khady Ndiaye, whom we met at the central market in Kédougou.
For other women, the situation becomes particularly challenging when it comes to preparing dishes like yassa, thiébou yap or other meals requiring a large quantity of onions.
"How can you prepare a good yassa with just a few pieces of onion? You have to reduce the quantities or change the menu," laments Mariama Cissokho.
Some also explain that this increase puts a strain on already tight family budgets. "Before, with a certain amount of money, you could buy enough onions for several meals. Today, you have to spend much more to get the same quantity," laments one mother.
Retailers
Faced with dwindling stocks, the few retailers who still have onions are prioritizing retail sales. This strategy allows them to meet high demand while gradually selling off their remaining stock. But for consumers, this practice only exacerbates the feeling of scarcity.
In Kédougou, housewives are now hoping for a swift return to normal market supplies so that prices can return to a more affordable level. Meanwhile, onions, a staple of Senegalese cuisine, are becoming increasingly difficult to find and are putting a greater strain on household budgets.
