Keur Massar: Floods plunge several neighborhoods into disarray

Keur Massar : Les inondations plongent plusieurs quartiers dans le désarroi

In Keur Massar, the rainy season is once again bringing worries and hardship for many families. In several neighborhoods of the municipality, stagnant water continues to flood the streets, making travel difficult and exposing residents to numerous inconveniences. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of the sanitation system in this part of the Dakar suburbs.

‎

All 54 neighborhoods of Keur Massar are affected by the floods, to varying degrees. Among the hardest-hit areas are Aladji Pathé, Santé Yalla, Khar Yalla, and Castors Sotrac. In some streets, the water is slow to drain, making roads virtually impassable.

‎

Beyond the inconvenience, these floods pose a problem that directly impacts the daily lives of residents. Difficult travel, disrupted access to homes, damaged roads, and health risks associated with stagnant water are just some of the challenges that people face.

For families living in the lowest-lying areas, each new rainfall fuels the fear of a worsening situation. This is why Mame Gana Kébé of the Fathie Mbeubeutou Askanwi movement is demanding the acceleration of the work. He is calling on public authorities and urging the relevant departments to expedite the sanitation projects in order to provide a lasting solution for the communities that face the same problem every year.

Rapid urbanization of the municipality, occupation of certain exposed areas and the inadequacy or saturation of water drainage structures are all factors that can aggravate the consequences of heavy rainfall.

For the local population, the urgent need is to break free from the cycle of temporary solutions. Beyond simply pumping water after each rainfall event, they are demanding permanent infrastructure and better risk assessment.
