« La pluie menace de tomber, attends que je… » : une amie raconte les derniers instants d’Awa Thiam, morte noyée avec son fils
Heavy rains that struck Senegal this weekend have left at least five people dead. Among the victims were Awa Thiam, 25, and her 4-year-old son, caught in their sleep when the wall of their house collapsed, allowing water to flood in and causing them to drown.
In its edition dedicated to the tragedy, L'Observateur revisits the young mother's final hours and gathers testimonies from her loved ones. Her husband's uncle, quoted by the newspaper owned by Groupe Futurs Médias, describes a generous, discreet woman deeply devoted to her family. "She only did good and only spoke good words," he testifies. He also remembers her as a person "of immense generosity and entirely dedicated to others."
Close to Awa since 2019, Ndèye Thioro Badji, quoted by the same source, recounts the moments leading up to the tragedy. The two women had become very close over the years. On Sunday, Thioro had served her lunch. As rain threatened, Awa told her she wanted to return home quickly with her son: “It’s going to rain, wait while I hurry. Look at Mbaye.” These would be their last exchanges.
"I know that my wife and child are dead."
Moments later, Thioro Badji returned to the neighborhood after learning it was flooded. There, she heard residents calling for Awa. The local youth mobilized to search for the mother and her child. Their bodies were eventually recovered from the water.
Thioro then stayed with the family during the removal of the bodies and their transfer to Dalal Jamm. She recounts the poignant words of Awa's husband: "I know that my wife and child are dead." She accompanied him until the arrival of relatives, whom she then welcomed into her home for the night.
