Lille (France) : Décès tragique d’in étudiant sénégalais SDF
The Senegalese student community in France is gripped by consternation following the death of a Senegalese student enrolled in Lille, Serigne Ba, this Thursday, June 11, at the hospital in Tourcoing, after falling into a coma.
This disappearance has brought to light the invisible ordeal of student poverty. The trap of precarity has turned into tragedy, especially since the young man had been living homeless on the streets for over two months, where he spent the entire month of Ramadan. Could he, lacking proper documentation and fearing deportation, have hidden his suffering and avoided healthcare for weeks?
Finally rushed to the hospital in critical condition, doctors diagnosed him with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a severe neurological disorder. It was precisely at the moment when a massive outpouring of support was being organized and launched to help him that Serigne Ba passed away. Too weak, he was reportedly declared brain dead before being taken off life support on Thursday evening.
In the face of this tragic outcome, the Association of Senegalese Students of the North (AESN) and the Amali Association continue to mobilize. The funds initially intended for his accommodation will now be used to finance his funeral and support his family back in Senegal.
A tragedy that cruelly recalls the dilemma faced by many students in the diaspora, torn between the weight of family expectations back home and the harsh reality of precariousness in exile.
