Louga : elle croit parler à son patron et lui transfert plus de 4,3 millions F CFA, l’IA est passée par là
A. Dieng, a 22-year-old money transfer point manager, was sentenced on October 21 in Louga to three months in prison for breach of trust by the District Court. She is accused of embezzling 4.3 million CFA francs belonging to her employer.
The Observer, which attended the hearing, noted the disturbing nature of the scheme. The defendant was allegedly tricked by con artists who cloned her boss's voice using artificial intelligence (AI). As quoted by the newspaper, she testified in court: "I thought I heard and recognized the exact voice of my boss, which is so familiar to me. It swept away all my doubts." She claimed to have completely lost her bearings, feeling "as if she had been bewitched."
To embezzle the funds, the newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias points out, the fraudsters asked him to first transfer the money from the till to his personal Wave account, before distributing it to the beneficiaries' phone numbers. Even more disturbing, they ordered him to "immediately delete the call history and electronic transaction receipts from his smartphone."
Despite the defense's arguments, which cited the proliferation of new-generation scams and warnings from the National Police about "voice cloning using Artificial Intelligence (AI)," the court found the defendant guilty of culpable negligence for failing to take the basic precaution of contacting her employer directly to verify the instructions she had received. She was thus convicted. Her alleged accomplices remain at large, the same source added.
