A 27-year-old worker, Moukhadam Guèye, succumbed to his injuries on September 25th, after a fall in a building under construction in Malika Montagne.
According to information from the investigation conducted by the Malika police station, reported by Libération in its Tuesday, September 29th edition, the victim was on the first floor, lowering a freight elevator loaded with bricks, when he apparently slipped. Seriously injured, particularly in the nose and both arms, the worker was taken to the Keur Massar hospital before being transferred to the main hospital in Dakar, where he was admitted to intensive care. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries two weeks later.
The investigation subsequently revealed several irregularities at the construction site. When questioned, the owner admitted to not having a building permit. City officials had previously ordered the work to stop, but the owner reportedly requested that it continue pending the issuance of the permit.
During their on-site investigation, police found only "a few vests" as personal protective equipment. This contrasts sharply with the statements of Mr. Guèye, the site manager, who claims to have provided the workers with helmets, vests, boots, and safety belts.
Libération reports that the prosecutor has ordered the case to be transferred to the judicial authorities. A request has also been sent to the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
