Mbeubeuss : le cri du cœur de 2 500 récupérateurs menacés de chômage
At the Mbeubeuss landfill, in operation since 1968 and currently undergoing rehabilitation, waste pickers are expressing serious concerns about their future. Interviewed by Le Soleil, Arona Niasse, president of the Mbeubeuss Waste Pickers Association, warned of the project's consequences: of the more than 3,000 workers active at the site, only 500 would be integrated into the new system, raising fears that the majority will lose their livelihoods.
According to him, the rehabilitation "creates more problems than it has solved." He specifically mentions the reduction of workspaces and the persistent health risks associated with the landfill, asserting that waste pickers remain exposed to serious illnesses.
Faced with this situation, the interviewee for the national daily newspaper calls on the State to support them, in particular through the establishment of housing cooperatives to guarantee their retraining and social protection.
