Mbeubeuss: A waste collector crushed by a garbage truck, the driver taken into custody

A fatal accident occurred on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the Mbeubeuss landfill, where a waste picker was fatally struck and then crushed by a garbage truck. The truck driver, who was pulled from the scene by SONAGED (National Water and Sanitation Company) agents just in time to avoid being lynched, was taken into custody for manslaughter.

Around 5 p.m., the Malika district police station was informed of a fatal accident at the Mbeubeuss landfill. An on-site visit by investigators revealed a lifeless body, covered with a multicolored sheet and lying on the ground, with bleeding from the nostrils and an open wound on the head.

The victim has been identified as A. DIOUF, aged 66, a recycler by profession and residing in Mbeubeuss.

The sequence of events of the accident

According to witness statements gathered at the scene, the victim was behind a Renault garbage truck belonging to the company Kelimane SARL. As the driver was reversing to unload a load of household waste, the vehicle first struck A. Diouf, causing him to fall to the ground. The truck's rear tires then ran over him, killing him instantly.

Faced with the reaction of the waste pickers present at the scene, who were attempting to physically assault him, the truck driver was removed from the area by SONAGED company officials. He was taken to their premises for safekeeping. The vehicle involved in the accident was vandalized by the waste pickers present at the scene.

The driver was identified as E. NGOM, 22 years old, a professional driver residing in his birthplace. He was taken to the police station, where he was placed in custody for manslaughter.

The victim's body was removed by firefighters and taken to the morgue at Dalal Diam Hospital. A request has been sent to the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

The public prosecutor has been informed of this case, and the investigation is currently underway.
