Mbour : un kankourang sorti sans autorisation, dix personnes arrêtées
Ten men were arrested in Mbour for bringing out a Kankourang outside the area designated by the prefect. Libération reports that the operation was carried out by the central police station, with support from the GMI and the BIP, against members of several unauthorized "lël" groups.
On August 28th, the prefect of Mbour issued a decree regulating the Kankourang procession during the "Mandingue September." The decree authorized only seven cell types: Thiocé Ouest, Santesou, Thiocé-Est, Sadio Kunda, Woyinka, Juju Cissé Kunda, and Diamaguène Kuyamba. Despite warnings from the police, other "lël" (priests) took their Kankourang out in violation of this administrative decision.
The ten people arrested admitted to being aware of the prefectural decree, according to Libération. They were taken into custody before being brought before the prosecutor in Mbour for violating the decree, participating in a prohibited demonstration, disturbing public order, and possessing bladed weapons. Police also seized seven machetes, four drums, Kankourang costumes, and a packet of marijuana, the same source reports.
