Mbour : Wave renoue avec ses premières communautés à travers « Sunu Gaal »
Her Senegalese adventure began on the fishing pier of Mbour, where fishermen, fishmongers, and traders first showed her their trust. Wave returned this Saturday, October 10, 2026, to Mbour-Tefess, where it all began. Through "Sunu Gaal" (our pirogue in Wolof), Wave is returning to her roots. This symbolic initiative recalls her first steps on the Mbour fishing pier. A return to her origins marked by gratitude and community engagement.
With "Sunu Gaal", the company intends to show its appreciation to these communities through concrete actions in support of the education and safety of fishermen.
Many Wave employees volunteered their time to help with the renovation work at the Golf school, demonstrating solidarity and community engagement. This mobilization illustrates the company's commitment to making a tangible contribution to improving the learning environment for students in Mbour-Tefess and Golf.
Thus, the "Sunu Gaal" community initiative has notably enabled the rehabilitation of classrooms and toilets at the Golf school, and provided it, like the Tafsir Demba Sall school, with textbooks and computer equipment. Even better, safety equipment was donated to several fishing associations.
According to El Hadji Serigne Falilou Mbacké Cissé, director of public relations for Wave Senegal, this approach reflects the company's desire to repay the communities for the trust they showed in it when it launched its activities in 2017-2018.
“We decided to return to these fishing communities and to initiate actions in support of the various groups operating in the area. At the Golf school, the interventions focused on the renovation of classrooms, the improvement of the perimeter fence, and reforestation activities, in order to improve the students' learning conditions. The company also strengthened the means of protection for fishermen, who face risks related to their activities at sea,” he explained.
Wave intends to make this commitment a long-term one. Discussions are underway with the Mbour Education and Training Inspectorate (IEF) with a view to signing a partnership agreement to support development projects benefiting local communities.
The mayor of Mbour, Cheikh Issa Sall, praised Wave's initiative, which he believes exemplifies corporate social responsibility. He particularly emphasized the importance of education in fishing communities, where the allure of fishing can contribute to school dropout rates.
On the issue of education, the mayor of Mbour, Cheikh Issa Sall, drew attention to the significant school dropout rate in fishing districts, where the attractiveness of fishing activities constitutes a real obstacle to keeping children in school.
“You don’t need to be 18 to go fishing. From the age of 10, a child can be very useful to their parents,” he emphasized. Faced with this reality, the mayor believes that teachers must go beyond their educational role by developing close relationships with families. According to him, they must be true educators and communicators, capable of raising parents’ awareness of the importance of keeping their children in school.
Sheikh Issa Sall also invited companies operating in Senegal to strengthen their social actions, particularly in the education, health and fishing sectors, in order to support the population and improve their living conditions.
The day also provided an opportunity to pay tribute to Salimata Gaye, presented as Wave's first agent in Senegal. She recounted the company's history and its evolution towards a privileged partnership with fishing industry stakeholders and, more broadly, the communities of Mbour.
