Médina : Un étudiant éthiopien arrêté par la BRS de Dakar avec 3 kg de khat
A major drug bust was successfully carried out by police in the heart of the Senegalese capital. On September 2, 2026, officers from the Dakar Regional Narcotics Brigade (BRS), attached to the Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking (OCRTIS), arrested YM Ismail, a 35-year-old Ethiopian national. Claiming to be a student residing in the Gueule-Tapée neighborhood, the man was found in possession of three kilograms of khat, according to Seneweb sources.
This operation follows investigations initiated by investigators after receiving operational intelligence. The information indicated the existence of a khat trafficking network, located between the Medina and Gueule-Tapée districts, and run by a foreign national.
Thanks to a well-informed source, the police were able to obtain the phone number of the man identified as the ringleader. To verify the information, a confirmation order was immediately placed. Although the suspect repeatedly evaded capture, the police's expertise and investigative techniques eventually convinced him to arrange a delivery.
The Gueule-Tapée area, near the canal, was designated as the location of the transaction. Once the surveillance operation was deployed, officers spotted a suspicious-looking individual, matching the description provided by the source, carrying a bag. The swift intervention of the police led to his immediate arrest.
A search of the bag he was carrying confirmed suspicions: three kilograms of khat were concealed inside. Law enforcement then proceeded to YM ISMAIL's residence to conduct a search, which proved unsuccessful. The suspect was taken to the Dakar headquarters of the BRS (Brigade de Recherches Spéciales - Special Research Brigade), while the seized drugs and cell phones were impounded for further investigation.
Khat is a shrub native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Its leaves, eaten fresh by chewing, contain active ingredients, primarily cathinone, with stimulant and euphoric effects similar to amphetamines. Classified as a narcotic and prohibited in many countries, its use leads to psychological dependence and serious cardiovascular and psychiatric complications.
