Dramatic rise of the Gambia River: Kédougou is nearing the alert level after a rise of 1.11 m in 24 hours

The river level has risen by 1.11 meters in 24 hours in Kédougou. Vigilance has been increased.

The rising water levels are increasing at several stations in the Gambia River basin. In Kédougou, the level rose from 4.81 to 5.92 meters in just 24 hours, a dramatic increase of 111 centimeters. The alert level, set at 7 meters, is now only 1.08 meters. This increase is all the more remarkable given that the level recorded on October 5th is 1.58 meters higher than the level recorded on the same date in 2025.

Thiokoye : +2.34 meters in 24 hours

The situation is even more dramatic in Thiokoye. The river level there has jumped from 3.66 meters to 6 meters, a rise of 2.34 meters in a single day. Compared to the same period last year, the increase is 2.39 meters. At Diarha Pont, the rise is also significant: +1.09 meters in 24 hours, with the level now reaching 3.05 meters.

Several stations are on the rise

The upward trend also extends to Mako, where the water level rose from 4.11 to 4.55 meters (+44 cm), and Diaguiri, which increased from 3.38 to 4.35 meters (+97 cm). In Gouloumbou, the water level reached 10.10 meters, a rise of 12 centimeters. Niokolokoba, for its part, recorded an increase of 19 centimeters, reaching 6.49 meters. Only Simenti saw a decline, falling by 23 centimeters to 9.44 meters.

Kédougou under surveillance

Even though none of the stations exceeds its alert level in the data provided, the increase recorded over 24 hours at certain points constitutes a warning sign. In Kédougou, only 1.08 meters remain before the alert level of 7 meters.

The hydrological bulletin from the Tambacounda/Kédougou Water Resources Brigade calls for particular attention to be paid to the rapid evolution of water levels on several watercourses in the Gambia basin.
