Tuesday, September 1st, 5 p.m., somewhere in the Senegalese capital. A GP "New York-Dakar" panics. One of his packages contains legal products but also 10.6 kg of hashish, 193 grams of cocaine and 170 grams of MDMA ( a synthetic drug in the amphetamine family, better known as ecstasy or molly ).
The GP alerted the police. But in the meantime, he had contacted the recipient of the suspicious package, a certain A. Diop, to give him a dressing-down, he claimed. Thus, he certainly put the Dakar regional brigade of the Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking (OCRTIS) on the trail of drug traffickers, but, undoubtedly unintentionally, allowed the first suspect to disappear.
The police can, however, take some solace in having identified two important, even central, links in the case. These are Gnima S., a woman located on the third floor of an apartment in Ngor-Almadies, and her husband, Aziz G., who resides in the United States. According to Libération, which broke the story in its Thursday edition, the package in question originated with Aziz G. and was to pass through his custody before reaching its final recipient, A. Diop.
When they received the alert from the GP, the OCRTIS agents arranged for the package to be delivered by the usual courier. "The delivery person led [the investigators] to Gnima S.'s home," the newspaper reports. "There, [she] was quickly apprehended upon receiving the package at her apartment. A subsequent search of the premises uncovered items such as underwear, candy, and sugar identical to the products found in the incriminating package, as well as 40,000 CFA francs in her handbag."
When questioned about her level of involvement in this affair, Gnima S. confirmed that she was the intended recipient of the package. According to Libération, she was quick to clarify that she was to keep the legal products and pass the drugs on to A. Diop.
She was taken into custody for conspiracy, possession and international trafficking of drugs (hashish, cocaine, MDMA), and money laundering, reports Libération. The newspaper adds that "A. Diop is actively being sought."
