Petite-Côte : Malgré 100 ans d'histoire, Mbour peine à valoriser ses immenses potentialités
Despite its status as a century-old city and its economic and tourist potential, Mbour is still struggling to fully take off. This was the conclusion reached during the second edition of the debate organized by the Movement for the Mobilization of Mbour (M3), focusing on the major issues related to the city's future.
Two major issues were at the center of the discussions: Mbour, a centenarian city: its development in the face of Act IV of decentralization and Coastal erosion: environmental and social issues.
According to Aliou Kane, coordinator of the M3, the objective of this initiative is to create a space for reflection and proposals around the essential questions for the future of the city.
“The objective of this debate is to organize intellectual reflections for the development of Mbour,” he explained.
The issue of the coastline was a central concern raised during the meeting. As a seaside town with significant tourism potential, Mbour is directly affected by the challenges impacting its coastal environment.
For Aliou Kane, this situation has repercussions on tourism and, more broadly, on the local economy.
“Currently, the issue of coastal erosion is crippling the tourism economy as such,” stressed Aliou Kane, emphasizing the need to find sustainable solutions to this problem.
Beyond the environmental issue, discussions also focused on the development prospects of a city that has passed the symbolic milestone of one hundred years.
Mbour has many assets, particularly in the areas of tourism, fishing, trade, and services. However, according to the organizers of the meeting, these potentials have not yet been sufficiently translated into local development.
“Mbour is slow to take off,” summarized the M3 coordinator.
This situation also raises the question of territorial governance and the opportunities offered by Act IV of decentralization, which should allow local authorities to better manage their development.
For this second edition, M3 had called upon two speakers: Ambassador Babacar Sané Ba, an expert in economic diplomacy, and Baïdy Tall, an expert in environmental and social assessment, as well as Dr. Mor Fall, as moderator.
The objective, however, was not to limit the discussions to mere theoretical reflection. For Aliou Kane, the debates must now lead to concrete proposals.
"It's good to theorize, but we need action," he acknowledged, announcing that the various contributions from the meeting will be used to develop recommendations.
The M3 thus intends to continue this dynamic of reflection and mobilization around the challenges facing Mbour. The ambassador and all stakeholders express the ambition to develop solutions that can support the city in a new phase of its development, drawing on its resources, its potential, and its identity as a century-old city.
