Pikine : Chute mortelle d’un maçon de 22 ans sur un chantier sans sécurité
A tragedy has struck the construction sector in the suburbs of Dakar. This Saturday, October 10, 2026, at around 2 p.m., a young bricklayer lost his life after falling to his death from the third floor of a building under construction in Pikine, Rue 10, near the Dame Thiaré pharmacy.
Alerted as soon as the alarm was raised, the officers from the Pikine district police station under the command of Commissioner Alioune Fall immediately went to the scene of the tragedy.
Upon arrival, police discovered the victim's lifeless body lying on the ground floor of a neighboring property. A preliminary examination of the body revealed severe injuries to the skull, significant nosebleeds, and multiple scratches on the arms.
The victim has been identified: he is Mr. A. Diallo, aged about 22 years and residing in the Pikine Guinaw Rails district.
A fatal workplace accident during a maneuver
Initial information gathered from witnesses sheds light on the sequence of events. According to the testimony of his coworker, Mr. M. Ndong, young Diallo was responsible for applying plaster to the facade of the third floor of this four-story building under construction.
Positioned higher up, on the upper terrace of the construction site, Mr. Ndong's role was to supply the victim with mortar, according to Seneweb sources. This was done using a jar filled with the mixture, attached to a rope sliding over a pulley. It was during this operation that the tragedy occurred: the rope suddenly snapped mid-transfer.
Overwhelmed and struck head-on by the detached charge, A. Diallo lost his balance before being violently thrown into the void, landing on the adjoining terrace. The impact was extremely violent; the young worker died instantly.
A blatant breach of safety rules
Beyond the mechanical failure, the investigation has revealed serious deficiencies in workplace safety. According to the investigators' initial findings:
None of the workers present on the site were wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) at the time of the incident.
The construction site had no collective protection measures, such as regulation scaffolding or fall protection nets.
The rope involved in the accident was immediately seized by law enforcement as evidence. Alerted, firefighters removed the body for transport to the morgue for an autopsy.
On the legal front, the victim's colleague, Mr. Ndong, was taken to the local police station for questioning. The contractor in charge of the construction site, Mr. L. Guissé, who was not present at the time of the incident, was urgently summoned for questioning.
The investigation, opened to determine all responsibilities in this fatal workplace accident, is ongoing. Prosecutor Saliou Dicko has been informed of the facts.
