A suspected counterfeiting ring was dismantled following a tip-off acted on October 5th by the Dakar Research Brigade (BR). According to Libération, operations carried out in Dakar, Mbour, Thiès, and Louga led to the arrest of six people and the seizure of counterfeit foreign currency banknotes worth 1.276 billion CFA francs.
The same source indicates that the gendarmes first arrested a suspected member of the network in Nguékhokh, as an individual was delivering counterfeit bills to him. The investigation then led the detectives to a former soldier recently returned from Italy, presented as the alleged mastermind of the network. To find his address, the gendarmes used a telephone ruse: during an incoming call on a phone seized during the operation, they tricked the caller into believing that the device had been confiscated.
The search uncovered dollars and euros worth over a billion euros hidden under a mattress. Police also seized a 9mm Taurus automatic pistol, ammunition, a bulletproof vest, a dagger, mercury, and two counterfeit stamps. The former soldier presented himself as a close protection instructor. A father and his three children were also among those arrested, Libération adds.
