A fruit vendor was stunned to find a baby boy on her stall on Ziguinchor Street in Point E. It was last Saturday, shortly before 9 a.m. The child was wrapped in a pink bag and abandoned on the table.

According to Libération, which broke the story, the vendor, AL Diallo, thought it was a pile of garbage. She decided to sweep it away, but realized the bag was heavy. "That's when she opened it and discovered, to her great surprise, that it contained a newborn boy with his umbilical cord," the newspaper reports.

AL Diallo alerted the members of the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) stationed at the UCAD roundabout. They then alerted the traffic officer working nearby, who in turn alerted the fire brigade.

They evacuated the baby to the Albert Royer hospital in Fann.

The Point E police station has opened an investigation.
