« Prépare tes bagages, tu... » : le récit des dernières heures de Pape Malick Ndour à Rebeuss
A dramatic turn of events in the Prodac case. Pape Malick Ndour is free. The former Minister of Youth and ex-coordinator of Prodac was released from prison late Tuesday evening, around 9 p.m. He was able to return home to Dakar to be with his family. L'Observateur reports that this release follows an unexpected reversal by the Public Prosecutor's Office, which decided to withdraw its appeal to the Supreme Court. This appeal had previously blocked the provisional release granted to him by the Financial Court of Appeal.
The conditions of freedom
His release is subject to strict judicial supervision: wearing an electronic bracelet, prohibition from leaving the Dakar region and obligation to return to his home before 9 p.m.
The story of the twists and turns and 24 hours of suspense
Nothing, however, foreshadowed such an outcome. On Monday at midday, the same source notes, Pape Malick Ndour received notification of the appeal filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office. Convinced that his detention would be prolonged, he resigned himself to it and even asked his relatives to bring him personal belongings and clothing the following day.
Tuesday night's dramatic turn of events
Just after finishing his rounds, around 6 p.m., a prison officer discreetly approached the inmate in cell 36 of Rebeuss prison and whispered to him: "Pack your bags, you're leaving right away. But don't tell anyone, not even your cellmates."
The lawyers and the person concerned were stunned.
The news took everyone by surprise. When contacted by the newspaper of the Future Media Group, his lawyer, Antoine Mbengue, was still unaware of the release. As for Pape Malick Ndour, he simply stated: "They were the ones who had me imprisoned [...] They are also the ones who decided on my release. I am just as surprised as you are."
As a reminder, the coordinator of the executives of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) is being prosecuted in the Prodac case for embezzlement of public funds, criminal association and money laundering, in a case involving an estimated amount of 2.7 billion CFA francs.
