A tragedy unfolded within hours in the Keury Souf neighborhood of Rufisque, where a newborn boy, abandoned in a garbage dump, died after being found alive. The investigation, opened under the authority of Prosecutor Cheikh Diakhoumpa, is ongoing to shed light on this case of infanticide.

It was on the night of September 3, 2026, around 11 p.m., that the central police station of Rufisque was informed of the discovery of a newborn baby abandoned at the place known as "PMU", in the Keury Souf district.

According to statements gathered at the scene, the newborn was found by street children, still alive, with its umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a simple plastic bag. The identity of the person responsible for this abandonment remains unknown at this stage.

Alerted, the police station had the infant admitted to the Youssou Mbargane Diop Regional Hospital in Rufisque in what was deemed an unstable condition. Simultaneously, the Rufisque Open Environment Educational Action Service (AEMO) was contacted to ensure the child's social care, and a doctor was summoned for consultation and treatment, according to Seneweb sources.

But on Friday, September 4, 2026, the hospital director informed the police station of the newborn's death, which occurred after its admission to the intensive care unit. Faced with this tragic outcome, a medical examiner was appointed to determine the cause of death.

Prosecutor Cheikh Diakhoumpa has been informed of this death and the investigation opened by the police services is continuing, in order to clarify the circumstances of this abandonment and to identify those responsible.
