"Septembre mandingue" : Le préfet de Mbour appelle à une édition 2026 sans violence
The prefect of Mbour, Amadou Diop, has called for non-violence during the 2026 edition of "Mandingue September," marked by the Kankourang processions. Scheduled from September 1st to 30th, the event will be governed by a prefectural decree outlining the organizational rules and security measures.
“We must organize this event without violence, tension, fights, physical assaults, or destruction of property belonging to others,” the official stated. Amadou Diop called on the organizers and the entire population to make fair play and discipline the watchwords of this year’s event.
The prefect, however, warned that those responsible for any acts of violence would be held accountable. "In the event of violence, responsibilities will be determined and the law will be applied," he insisted, adding that mid-term meetings would allow for an assessment of the activities and, if necessary, the implementation of corrective measures.
This year, the organization of "Mandingue September" was preceded by consultations between the administrative authority and the Mandingue community, guardians of the preservation and protection of this cultural tradition. The discussions focused in particular on the evaluation of the 2025 edition, which was considered generally successful, but marked by a few activities organized outside the bounds of regulations.
Following this preparatory work, a committee was established to review applications for the creation of cells. Of the eight proposals selected by the local authority, the eight proposed cells were included in decree no. 028 of August 28, 2026, issued by the prefectural authority to regulate this year's event.
The prefect was keen to clarify that the administration does not create the units, but intervenes to supervise their activities based on proposals from the community.
In accordance with the established rules, outings are scheduled for Sundays in September, as well as nights, with the exception of Thursdays. Organizers are also asked to implement internal security measures to ensure discipline within the various groups and to facilitate their cooperation with the security forces.
The routes taken for each outing must be communicated to the police at least 48 hours in advance. This measure is intended to allow for better security planning and to prevent clashes between cells, which are often a source of tension and violence.
The police, responsible for enforcing the order, must ensure its strict application. Only the cells listed in the administrative act will be authorized to organize activities, including processions and public gatherings. Those not included must refrain from any such public activity.
Consultation between the organizers, the police, and the administrative authorities will continue throughout the period. "If everyone plays their part, the 2026 'Mandingue September' will be a great success," declared Prefect Amadou Diop, calling for this cultural celebration to be a moment of unity, discipline, and peace.
