Twenty-three years after the events, the Ziguinchor research section (SR) apprehended Y. Sané, implicated in the accidental shooting death of Siré Goudiaby, a 17-year-old girl and niece of a current member of parliament. The case, which had remained unsolved since September 2003, originated during an initiation ceremony held in the village of Mandégane.
It all began in 2003. The Mandégane village youth association organized a ritual ceremony called "leul," traditionally dedicated to young girls. The organizers strictly forbade the use of firearms for this occasion. Y. Sané, however, disregarded this rule and arrived at the ceremony with his hunting rifle. During the event, a shot was accidentally fired, striking 17-year-old Siré Goudiaby at point-blank range. According to Seneweb sources, she died instantly.
Faced with the tragedy, Y. Sané fled. He first sought refuge in Guinea-Bissau, where he spent approximately five years out of sight. He eventually crossed the border into Senegal. He initially stayed in Boutoupa Camaracounda before settling in Kolda. After a long period of wandering, he finally returned to live with his parents in the village of Baghagha, in the rural commune of Tobor.
It was in this locality that investigators located him, more than two decades after the events. Members of the Ziguinchor Regional Investigation Service (SR) infiltrated the village for over twenty-four hours. This surveillance and intelligence operation finally bore fruit, as Y. Sané was arrested in a village tavern.
When questioned by investigators, he readily admitted to the facts and stated that he had fired inadvertently, thus confirming the accidental nature of the gunshot that had cost Siré Goudiaby his life twenty-three years earlier.
On August 27, 2026, Commander Diouck, head of the Ziguinchor Regional Investigation Service (SR), accompanied by his team and suspect Y. Sané, traveled to Mandégane, the scene of the tragedy that occurred in September 2003, escorted by two platoons from the Security and Intervention Squadron (ESI) of Bignona. They interviewed approximately ten people who might provide information useful in uncovering the truth.
A reconstruction of the events was then organized where the tragedy occurred in 2003, in the presence of eyewitnesses from the time, the village chief, and several notables from Mandégane.
Following this, the suspect will be presented on Monday, August 31st, to Prosecutor Abdou Khadre Diop, head of the Ziguinchor prosecutor's office, who will decide on the next steps in this twenty-three-year-old case. Y. Sané is being prosecuted for manslaughter.
