Sonatel : Un commercial déféré pour avoir siphonne 700 000 FCFA du compte Orange Money d'un client
A Sonatel employee stole 700,000 FCFA from a customer's Orange Money account using company tools and applications. The perpetrator, Abdou Karim Sané, a sales representative at the Sonatel branch in Rufisque, obtained the victim's personal data, fraudulently changed his SIM card, and then reset his Orange Money PIN. Investigators from the Rufisque central police station reconstructed the method used. The accused was brought before the Rufisque High Court on Monday.
The investigation was launched on August 22, 2026, following a complaint filed by Mouhamadou Diop, a merchant residing in the Gabon neighborhood of Rufisque. The complainant explained that his Orange Money account, which he used as a savings account, had stopped working on August 7, around 9:00 PM. Upon returning home, after his phone line was restored, the merchant said he tried to access his account. However, this was impossible because his PIN had been changed.
The technical investigation carried out by the police led them to a Sonatel agent. A check with Orange Money customer service revealed an unpleasant surprise for the merchant. Of the more than 850,000 FCFA he had in his account, only 145,526 FCFA remained. Two transactions had been made on August 7th: 200,000 FCFA at 9:03 PM and 500,000 FCFA at 9:12 PM.
The phone that betrays
The thief was betrayed by the use of his mobile phone. A request sent to Orange revealed that between 8:58 p.m. and 9:12 p.m., the victim's number had been entered into an iPhone 16 Pro Max, identified by its IMEI. Before and after this sequence, the number had been used on the complainant's usual phone. A second request allowed investigators to identify the SIM cards usually associated with the iPhone. These led to Abdou Karim Sané, 31, a sales administrator and sales representative at Sonatel.
When questioned by investigators, Abdou Karim Sané admitted to having accessed the victim's phone number. He stated that he was trying to verify the identifier of another number on behalf of a client when he mistakenly accessed Mouhamadou Diop's number. According to his statements, he then discovered that over one million CFA francs were available in the account. The accused declared that he used several applications to achieve his goal. He first used "Kibaaru VU 360" to obtain the identifying information associated with the victim's number, namely his name, date and place of birth, and ID card details. He then used Simplissimo, employing the SIM card replacement feature. After entering the retrieved information, he obtained a new SIM card associated with the victim's number. For the final step, the agent admitted, he used BO360, an application linked to Orange Money account management, to reset the password. Once the SIM card was inserted into his iPhone, he allegedly changed the PIN before making the two withdrawals.
Money for debts… and Parifoot
When questioned, Abdou Karim Sané justified his actions by citing financial difficulties. He mentioned a 50,000 FCFA savings plan, a 20,000 FCFA debt to his mother, and a Wi-Fi bill of approximately 20,000 FCFA. He also admitted to having played Parifoot (a French football betting system) for less than 50,000 FCFA and giving 15,000 FCFA to his girlfriend. Following the investigation, Abdou Karim Sané was brought before the Rufisque court on Monday on charges of unauthorized access to and withdrawal from a computer system, theft, fraud, and breach of personal data.
