TikTok : Comment un faux marabout a soutiré 4 millions à une entrepreneuse
A fake marabout has been caught in the net of the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC). H. Sow alias "Modou Diop", a farmer residing in Sédhiou, is being prosecuted for fraud involving quackery, after having swindled, according to the DIC, 4 million CFA francs from a woman named AM, who sought his services to prosper in her business.
The case dates back to August 2026. AM discovered videos on TikTok of Modou Diop, who presented himself as a marabout capable of performing mystical rituals to help his clients succeed in their businesses. She contacted him via WhatsApp. He promised to help her climb the corporate ladder.
After an initial transfer of 500 CFA francs following a fortune-telling session, requests for money multiplied. The marabout also put her in contact with a man named Mouhamed. On August 3rd, at the Keur Massar roundabout, the complainant gave him 150,000 CFA francs in exchange for three bottles containing magic potion.
The supposed marabout then ordered her to take baths with these products and kept her under his control. Worse, he also made her believe that djinns had begun to possess her and that she risked a fatal fate if she abandoned the ritual.
Under this pressure, the woman claims to have made several transfers via Wave and Orange Money and handed over various sums intended for the purchase of goats, cattle, and other offerings. She estimates her losses at 4 million CFA francs.
Upon receiving the complaint, the DIC (Criminal Investigation Division) obtained information from telephone operators and money transfer services. The investigation revealed the use of multiple identities by the same individual, who presented himself sometimes as Modou Diop, sometimes as Mouhamed.
Investigators finally located H. Sow in Ndiolofène Bourabou, in the Sédhiou region. A warrant was issued for his arrest. He was apprehended at the Keur Ayib special police station while attempting to reach Dakar, before being taken to the DIC (Criminal Investigation Division).
Initially, H. Sow denied the allegations. Confronted with the evidence gathered by investigators, including the analysis of his phone records and his responses to the subpoenas, he eventually admitted to giving the three bottles to the complainant and acknowledged receiving 4 million CFA francs through various transactions. He claimed to have spent the entire amount on his personal needs and those of his family.
During the confrontation, he stated his willingness to repay the sum, but requested a six-month delay. This proposal was rejected by the complainant.
The file also reveals that H. Sow is known to the forensic science police. He had been brought before the Ziguinchor prosecutor's office for trafficking and circulating counterfeit banknotes.
After being held in custody, he was taken to the prosecutor's office in Pikine-Guédiawaye before being sent to prison.
