Tirailleurs sénégalais : deux fils de Saint-Louis honorés en France en présence de Mansour Faye
Eighty-six years after their deaths during the Second World War, Yaly Fall and Souleymane Ly, two natives of Saint-Louis, Senegal, were honored in France. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in their memory, in the presence of the mayor of Saint-Louis, Mansour Faye.
The duty to remember has crossed borders to pay tribute to two sons of Saint-Louis who fell far from their homeland. On June 18, 1940, in the midst of World War II, Yaly Fal and Souleymane Ly lost their lives in France while fighting for freedom.
For decades, their names remained in the shadows of history, despite their sacrifice. Today, a tribute was paid to them in the town of Gigny, France, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque intended to perpetuate their memory.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the mayor of Saint-Louis, Mansour Faye, who came to participate in this tribute dedicated to these two worthy sons of the three-hundred-year-old city. This symbolic gesture from the German municipality was particularly appreciated by the mayor of Saint-Louis.
Beyond the tribute paid to Yaly Fal and Souleymane Ly, this initiative recalls the contribution of Senegalese riflemen and, more broadly, African soldiers to the fight for freedom during the two world wars.
By honoring these two men, the town of Gigny is helping to rehabilitate their memory and pass on their story to future generations. This gesture of recognition also underscores the historical ties between Africa and Europe, forged in the trials of war and the sacrifice of those who fought far from home.
