Touba : la veuve, le bijoutier et le plan diabolique pour dépouiller une femme d'affaires de plus de 20 millions F CFA
D. Lo, a 62-year-old widow, and B. Thiam, a 52-year-old jeweler, are being prosecuted before the Diourbel court for flagrant offenses, accused of defrauding a businesswoman, A. Diop, of over 20 million CFA francs and gold jewelry. The prosecutor has requested a six-month prison sentence for both of them.
L'Observateur, which attended the hearing, reports that after the death of A. Diop's mother, D. Lo approached her, promising to treat her "like her own daughter." Citing difficulties related to an inheritance, she then repeatedly asked her for money, the same source indicates. Between January and March, the victim notably took out two bank loans of 3 and 4 million CFA francs to help her. She also entrusted her gold jewelry to her as collateral.
The mechanism of usury: By pawning the jewelry, D. Lo allegedly obtained 12 million from jeweler B. Thiam, but reportedly told the victim he had only received 10 million. The scheme was exposed when the jeweler demanded 15 million to return the jewelry. The investigation revealed that he was engaging in clandestine loans, with monthly interest of 1.25 million on the 12 million loaned.
In court, L'Obs adds, the two defendants blamed each other. The plaintiff, represented by lawyer El Hadji Diouf, produced audio recordings and bank statements, claiming 50 million in damages and interest as well as the maximum penalty of imprisonment for debt.
