Thirteen femicides have been reported in the media in ten months, two of them occurring during the same weekend. Through these figures, the feminist organization WaxJotna is raising the alarm about the continued violence against women and girls, arguing that the commitments made do not yet guarantee their protection.

According to its press release published on Monday, October 26, these tragedies occurred a little over a month after the validation of the second National Action Plan for the eradication of gender-based violence (PAN VBG 2).

In its statement, the organization demands that "full light be shed" on the deaths of two women that occurred a few hours apart in Thiès and Podor on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, 2026. It also calls for the recognition of femicide as a specific crime in the Senegalese Penal Code and the establishment of reliable data to document and track these crimes in the country.

Furthermore, WaxJotna calls for the immediate strengthening of prevention and protection mechanisms, as well as effective support for victims, survivors and their families.

As a reminder, the organization is reacting to the death of Mame Diarra Sow, a 24-year-old hairdresser found dead on the night of Saturday, October 24th to Sunday, October 25th, in the Keur Massamba Guèye neighborhood of Thiès. According to press reports, she was fatally stabbed by her partner, who has been arrested by the police.

In Podor, Aminata Sy, a 17-year-old high school senior who had been missing since Saturday, was found dead on Sunday, bound in a bag, in the Lao Demba neighborhood. Her partner, considered the main suspect, is being actively sought, and an investigation has been opened by the gendarmerie, according to the statement.
