Ziguinchor: Launch of a large-scale operation to clear the area around the Aline Sitoé Diatta stadium

In Ziguinchor, the Prefecture and the City Hall launched a large-scale operation on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, to clear makeshift structures and illegal occupations throughout the municipality. The first phase of this operation focused on the area surrounding the Aline Sitoé Diatta Stadium. This joint action aims to restore public order, strengthen the safety of residents, and protect public spaces from any illegal occupation.

On the ground, the operation was overseen by Modou Samb, Deputy Prefect of Ziguinchor, with the mobilization of municipal teams and logistical support from the Armed Forces. Local authorities explained that the objective was to reclaim the occupied areas, improve traffic flow, and enhance security around the stadium, particularly during major sporting events that draw thousands of spectators.

This initiative is part of the national strategy to combat the unauthorized occupation of public space, a policy aimed at ending precarious settlements and illegal occupations that hinder urban mobility and expose residents to security risks. Local authorities state that this operation reflects their commitment to providing residents with a healthier, safer living environment that complies with urban planning standards.

The relevant authorities specify that the affected businesses and residents were notified beforehand, with some receiving deadlines to voluntarily vacate the premises. However, faced with resistance, a forceful intervention by law enforcement was necessary. The authorities announce that other sites in the municipality will be targeted in the coming days, in accordance with the previously published plan.

In addition to the recovery of spaces, this operation marks a strong political will: that of reaffirming the authority of the State and local authorities in the management of the public domain, while guaranteeing the inhabitants of Ziguinchor a safe and orderly urban environment.
