À 48 heures de défier le Maroc, Cody Gakpo vit un terrible deuil !
Two days before the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup round of 32 match between the Netherlands and Morocco, Cody Gakpo is going through a terrible personal ordeal. The Liverpool and Oranje star striker, along with his partner Noa van der Bij, announced on Saturday the tragic loss of their unborn son during the pregnancy. "It is with broken hearts that we announce that our baby boy has passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo, loved forever, our son forever," his partner shared in a poignant message posted on her Instagram account, just weeks after announcing this second pregnancy.
In another post, Noa van der Bij shared a moment of reflection she experienced in the United States, where she is accompanying the Dutch international (53 caps) during the competition: “We went to church to light a candle. Then, we went with our son Samuel to the playground. There was another child there: his name was Elijah. We couldn't have hoped for a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Despite the immense pain of this tragedy, the player is expected to remain committed to his national team for the remainder of the World Cup. Having made an excellent start to the tournament with two goals and an assist in three group matches, Cody Gakpo is expected to be available and maintain his position in attack. As a reminder, this crucial knockout match against the Atlas Lions is scheduled for Monday night/Tuesday morning in Monterrey, at 1:00 AM (Senegal time, GMT).
